i can talk about juan gabriel forever, about him and his music .
this time i just want to share a little magical moment that happened to me, and i just remembered this morning.
music has been a central focus in my life, and in the old days : radio .
radio and their presenters were very important to life in mexico city.
radio variedades in particular and their personalities, OMG i used to listen to radio variedades every day and play along on their contest, they would also sent small planes with promotions to my neighborhood , dropping flyers , kids running to get them.
radio variedades used to be our morning alarm!
every day at 730am they would play : buenos dias senor sol ( good morning mr. sun) by juan gabriel. 730am, gave us time to get ready and go to school, a good 30 minutes walk . starting time at school was 845am.
then time passed, in the early 90s i moved to chicago. i missed mexican radio and my little black radio so much that i asked my family to tape hours and hours of music and send it to me, which they did.
one saturday morning/afternnon while living in rogers park , me, my mother and sister decided to clean the apartment from top to bottom, “ play some music” they asked me.
i went to my room and found the tapes from mexican radio.
as we were getting into the cleaning and the music, at around 12 30pm, buenos dias senor sol started to play. the 3 of us looked at each other puzzled and asked : 730am?
the music transported us to the past. the power of music and radio made us believe that it was 730am on a weekday and we have to get ready to go to school.
